We all spend much of our lives either reliving past experiences or anxiously anticipating

future events. This means we usually miss out on what is happening right here, right now!

Mindfulness practice can help us and our clients to release ourselves from existing in the

unreality of the past or future and give us the freedom to begin to “just notice” where and

who we are

in the reality of the  moment.

Workshop aims & learning outcomes:
  • To encourage self awareness by learning mindfulness skills
  • To enhance your practice by discovering how mindfulness can be incorporated into client work
  • To provide a safe space to explore your self using creative art materials
  • To explore new concepts through discussion with peers

Using Art & Play Within the Therapeutic Relationship

A CPD Workshop for Qualified & Student Counsellors & Psychotherapist

Presented by Nicky Harbridge (BA Hons) (MBACP) & Edward Silver (BA Hons) (MBACP)

Saturday 9th June 2012 Cavendish Memorial Hall in Cavendish Suffolk

Closing date for booking 26th May 2012

Therapeutic Art & Play can provide safe ways to help clients of all ages express

themselves. Much inner healing can occur through using crayons or paints to demonstrate
feelings which lie too deep for words. The third space of the sandtray can provide insight
into family dynamics or allow a person to work through a trauma in a safe way. Puppets
can become a vehicle for an inner small voice that needs to be heard. This workshop will
provide practitioners with an opportunity to experience how it feels to use art and
therapeutic play from the perspective of both practitioner and client.

Workshop aims & learning outcomes:
  • An introduction to using sandtray techniques with clients
  • Using figures & natural materials for assessment & self awareness
  • Experiential use of guided visualisation & art to explore the unconscious
  • Use of puppets to help clients get in touch with the true self
  • Practical advice on art/play ‘toolkit’ for practitioners
  • Space to share experiences and support each other
  • Opportunity for discussion to link theory with practice

In our work as counsellors we encourage our client’s to focus on the signals they receive

from their feelings, emotions, cognitions and bodies to help them determine what is

important to them with regard to their individual needs, hoping that they may experience

a better quality of life on many levels. The question is how much of this care and

consideration do we give to ourselves? How do we guard against burnout? What are the

warning signs to look out for? What can we do to ensure safe and ethical practice? This

workshop will give practitioners the opportunity to reflect on these questions and find

some

practical answers to help them enjoy a safe and fulfilling practice.

This workshop aims to provide:

  • A holistic approach to self care for practitioners

  • Awareness of the effects of burnout & secondary stress

  • Tools to assess your self and prevent burnout

  • Space to share experiences and support each other

  • Time to reflect on ones own needs and how to fulfil them
Learning outcomes:
  • Ability to devise a personal self care program
  • Understanding of the affects of burnout & secondary stress
  • Ability to recognise the warning signs of professional burnout
  • Understanding of how to maintain safe and ethical practice
